Mission Lousehill

“Unless we are willing to encourage our children to reconnect with and appreciate the natural world, we can’t expect them to help protect and care for it”

  • David Suzuki

In the heart of West Reading’s Dee Park, there is a woodland called Lousehill Copse. A google maps reviewer aptly describes it as a “great piece of wilderness hidden in a town.” Because Lousehill Copse is located in a dense housing area, its beauty went largely unnoticed and its capacity for flourishing fauna and flora untapped.

From our perspective Lousehill Copse was crying out for a makeover - to be spruced up, discovered, and loved by the Reading community. So we were delighted when The Conservation Volunteers asked us to partner with them on an ambitious two year project to revive the woodland.

With funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we designed ‘Mission Lousehill’ to  improve Lousehill biodiversity and enhance its natural space for wildlife and people. With expertise from The Conservation Volunteers, and Nature Nurture’s wealth of experience in connecting people to the natural world, we were able to implement an award-winning initiative that encompassed:

- The design and installation of a permanent way-marked Wild Workout trail with wildlife facts

- Forest School programmes for 6 primary schools within walking distance from the woodland

- ‘Wild Day’ creative community events, such as ‘spy missions’ to encourage children to investigate the woodland, solve clues and find out about priority species and how to support them.

- A community Bioblitz event

In 2019 we were delighted to receive the prestigious National Institute of Outdoor Learning Community Development Award.
