We’re on a mission to give children the chance to be happy, have fun, enjoy nature and get active outdoors in their local green space.
Reading, like many towns has loads of wild spaces, where children can roam free, play and learn. Sadly, these spaces are underused by the community. And it’s not just our town - parents across the land are struggling to get their kids away from the screens, outside, active and having fun. We’re through to the final of ITV’s People’s Millions and we need your vote to WIN £50,000. We’re on telly on 24th November and we’re going to need 1000s of people across the land to pick up the phone and vote for ‘The WIld Reading project’.
So how are we going to do it?
We’re going to provide Free nature themed Family Wild Day events, workshops for schools, training for teachers, outdoor Playdays for children. There'll be stuff you may remember as a child, like building dens, hunting bugs, conker contests...as well as learning about nature, all in our local parks, woodlands and other wild spaces. We’re going to map the Wild side of Reading and help people of all ages discover some of the amazing wildlife that live there too!
We’ll join forces with local and national conservation groups and organisations. We'll work closely with schools, Children’s Centres, Playclubs to make sure every child in Reading has the opportunity to get outdoors and have some Wild time. And it doesn’t stop there - the amazing Wild Website will be crammed with maps, apps and activity ideas so everyone from Reading and beyond can access and enjoy all the wild spaces our town has on offer. Once people experience the awe and wonder of the nature and wildlife on their doorstep, we’re sure they’ll want to go back for more.
There are 2 simple things we'd like you to do to make the town go wild.
- Pop in your contact details below.
- Pick up the phone on Monday 24th November when ITV reveals the special voting number and vote for 'The Wild Reading Project' (we'll send this over to you by email).
We’re proud to be part of The Wild Network, whose mission is to support children, parents and guardians of children to roam free, play wild and connect with nature. An amazing film, Project Wild Thing, kickstarted this nationwide movement and as part of the project we’re going to create ‘The Wild Town Toolkit’ which we’ll share with other organisations across the land who want to make their own town go wild!.
Who on earth is behind this wild project?
We are the Nature Nurture team; a dedicated bunch of Forest School leaders, teachers, designers, environmental educators and wildlife experts. We have been running wild projects in Reading for over 3 years and this is our most ambitious project yet.
As our national treasure Sir David Attenborough says,"If children don't grow up knowing about nature and appreciating it, they won't understand it, and if they don't understand it, they won't protect it. And if they don't protect it, who will?"
We believe that spending time outdoors in the natural environment is vital to children developing into happy, healthy people who care about the planet.
From meeting Nature Nurture just once, we as a family have already discovered 3 complete urban wildlife/nature gems on our doorstep that we never knew existed. Looking keenly for future projects and thrilled with the prospect of having a guide to our local area. We are so lucky to live in a town full of greenery but it is mostly Reading's best kept secrets. Let's hope Nature Nurture manage to let the secrets out for all to share!!!"
